“So what if Shakespeare isn’t the man we think he was? That’s the beauty of this hard-fought gem. It threads an intricate conversation among Shakespeare devotees with a band of believers who posit, among other things, that having access to books, wealth and a tenure in Italy are enough to set the story straight.”

– Erin Trahan, WBUR The ARTery

“Director Cheryl Eagan-Donovan queries experts on this claim, including the actors Sir Derek Jacobi and Mark Rylance, and travels to Venice and Verona and other settings of Shakespeare plays to investigate. Whether he was the Bard or not, de Vere was a fascinating guy.”

– Peter Keough, The Boston Globe

“Flamboyant nobleman, poet and unabashed bisexual Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford and among the first to compose love poetry at the Elizabethan court, is believed by some scholars and historians to be the “real” William Shakespeare. Eagan-Donovan’s film focuses on the 18-month period when De Vere escaped the confines of life at Elizabeth’s Court and traveled throughout Italy and Europe from his home base in Venice. In London, De Vere associated with a circle of poets, many of them gay, notes Eagan-Donovan, adding that although married, De Vere had mistresses and when he returned from Italy, it was in the company of a young male singer.”

Product Description

An A-list party boy on the continental circuit travels throughout Italy and Europe from his home base in Venice and becomes the world’s greatest writer.

Nothing Is Truer than Truth introduces Edward de Vere, Seventeenth Earl of Oxford, A-list party boy on the continental circuit, who spent a year and a half in Venice and traveling in Italy, learning about commedia dell’arte and collecting the experiences that would become known as the works of Shakespeare. Filmed in Venice, Verona, Mantua, Padua, and Brenta, the film ventures to actual sites De Vere visited in 1575-76, including the settings for The Merchant of Venice, Othello, Romeo and Juliet, and Two Gentlemen of Verona. The film features renowned Shakespeare scholars, actors, and directors, including Sir Derek Jacobi, Mark Rylance, Tina Packer, and Diane Paulus, and argues that De Vere’s bisexuality is the reason for the pseudonym “Shakespeare.”

Nothing Is Truer than Truth looks at the process of writing, where life experience, imitation of the masters, and relentless revision come together to create genius, as the key to discovering Edward de Vere as the true author of the works attributed to William Shakespeare. The film reveals De Vere’s epic life story and introduces a brilliant, troubled, charming man.
