Creating Authentic Characters for the Screen: Manuscript Consulting for Writers, Producers, and Directors

Screenwriting consultant Cheryl Eagan-Donovan will assess your project and provide strategies for discovering and developing unique, authentic voices for narrative scripts and documentaries. Commissioners, funders, and programmers are looking for lived experience and representation of diverse, previously unseen characters and individuals. As writers, directors, and producers, we can connect with new audiences by bringing to the screen stories from communities that have been previously underrepresented, including women, BIPOC, AAPI, LGBTQ+ individuals, and differently-abled people. Specific recommendations will be given for tapping into your own experience as a writer and crafting a script that includes representative new voices for film and TV projects. She has served as a screenwriting mentor for the SXSW Film Festival Conference, spoken at AWP writing conferences on the art of adaptation, and worked with many successful writers and producers on developing and revising feature-length narrative screenplays, episodic scripts, bibles, decks, and pitches.

Cheryl Eagan-Donovan (M.F.A.) is an award-winning writer, director, and producer whose documentary Nothing Is Truer than Truth premiered on Hulu in 2019, is currently available on Amazon Prime in the U.S. and Canada, and aired on SkyArts TV in the U.K. under the new title Shakespeare: The Man Behind the Name. Her debut documentary All Kindsa Girls screened at film festivals and art house theaters in London, Toronto and throughout the U.S. She is a frequent lecturer at conferences and has taught writing, film, and literature at Lesley University, Northeastern University, Lasell University, and Grub Street Center for Creative Writing.
